3 killed in landslides; road, rail services disrupted in Asom

Guwahati, June 13 (UNI) Three people were killed in landslides in Barak valley while rail and road communications remained disrupted in several parts of Asom following heavy landslides and floods triggered by torrential rains in the past few days.

Rail services on Silchar-Lumding Hill Section of N F Railway remained cut off following landslides in twenty places in the 22 kms stretch of Bori Hill ranges. All trains in this section have been cancelled indefinitely, while restoration works were on in full swing. Railway sources said restoration would be possible after one week.

Road communications from Barak valley to rest of Asom and Tripura, Mizoram and parts of Manipur have also been cut off due to landslides and floods in several places on National Highway 44 of the valley.

A report from Silchar said road communication from here to Guwahati via Shillong has been disrupted after the Balley Bridge of the Border Road Task Force (BRTF) was washed away at Malidahar.

Meanwhile, three persons of a family were killed in landslides at Damchora village in Cachar district on Monday night as their houses were washed by landslides. All the victims were females, the report said.

Six persons were injured in landslides even as 13 houses were washed away in the Katigora area of the district, it said.

The overall flood situation in Barak Valley had worsened as the rivers Barak and Kushiara in Karimganj districts and Katakhal river in Hailakandi district are flowing above the danger level inundating low lying areas. Thirty houses were damaged by the flood waters in Hailakandi district.

Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj towns are reeling under flash floods triggered by heavy rains.
