Guwahati, June 12 : The spectre of devastating floods loom large in Asom with the rivers flowing above the danger level following heavy rains in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and different parts of the state.

Official sources said here today that the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Dibrugarh town in the district and Neamatighat in Jorhat district.

The Jia Bharali river was flowing above the red mark at Sonitpur district and the Kushiyara river at Karimganj district.

In most other places also, the river water was almost close to the danger level, the sources added.

Water level in all major rivers was on the rise in most of the places. With the Met office predicting a favourable monsoon for the state, the rivers are expected to over-flow with the next seasonal rains lashing the state.

Heavy rainfall was also reported from across the state with Karimganj district recording maximum 172.8 mm rainfall over the last 24 hours.

Rainfall over 120 mm was recorded in Cachar and Nalbari district, official sources said.

The people who were displaced in the earlier floods of the season have already returned to their homes with the government help, the sources added.
