Fernandes arrives in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jun 12 (UNI) AICC general secretary and Union Minister for Statistics and Programme and Implementation Oscar Feranandes arrived here today to attend the crucial Congress Legislature Party's meeting.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Onwardly Nongtdu had summoned the CLP meeting after at least 20 rebel Congress MLAs demanded a change of leadership in the state.

Soon after his arrival, Mr Fernandes met Mr Nongtdu and several other senior state Congress leaders.

Mr Nongtdu briefed Mr Fernandes on the latest political development in the state.

The Union Minister will meet all the 29 Congress legislators during the CLP meeting.

The Congress high command had rushed Mr Fernandez and Maj. Ved Prakash here to assess the sudden political turmoil in the party.

At least 20 rebel Congress MLAs urged Ms Gandhi that they had no faith in the leadership of Chief Minister D D Lapang.

They proposed the name of Meghalaya Minister for Parliamentary Affairs J D Rymabi instead of Mr Lapang.
