Cong, DMK reach understanding over civic polls

Pondicherry, June 12 (UNI) The Congress and DMK reached an understanding today to contest the next two phases of civic polls in this union territory.

The understanding between the two parties was reached after resumed discussions between the party representatives today.

As per the agreement reached, DMK would contest the post of Pondicherry Municipal chairman while the Congress will contest for the post of the Ozhukarai Municipal chairman.

The DMK will contest in 20 out of 42 wards in Pondicherry Municipality and 10 out of 37 in Ozhukarai municipality.

Local body elections are being held in the union territory after a gap of 38 years. Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam municipalities and five commune panchayats will go to polls in the first phase from June 24, while Pondicherry and Ozhukarai municipalities and Villianur commune panchayats would go to polls in the second phase on June 27.

Elections for four commune panchayats would be held on July 1 in the third and final phase of polling.
