Bopanna takes on Federer in German tourney

New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna plays the match of his life when he takes on world number one and defending champion Roger Federer in the first round of the 680,250 euro Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament at Halle, Germany, later today.

Bopanna finds himself pitted against the top seed Swiss after the Indian edged past Kristian Pless of Denmark 7-6(7/5), 7-6(7/3) in the third round of the qualifiers.

Bopanna had a fine run in the tournament, beating higher ranked opponents in the qualifiers but it would require nothing short of a miracle for him even to snatch a set from Federer.

Leander Paes has teamed up with Martin Damm of Czech Republic for the doubles event in the tournament and they kick off their campaign with a first round match against Chris Haggard of Czech Republic and Jiri Novak of South Africa, according to information received here today.
