India records most newborn and maternal deaths

Bhopal, June 11 (UNI) India stands on the top of the list of ten countries registering maximum deaths of newborn babies and mothers due to pregnancy and delivery related complications.

The list includes China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Indonesia in South Asia and Ethiopia, Nigeria, Congo and Tanzania in Africa.

As per the 'State of the Worlds' Mothers 2006' report released by the 'Save the Children', about 27 lakh deaths out of 40 lakh deaths of newborn babies take place in these ten countries.

In addition to it, high number of maternal deaths were reported in African countries Angola, Kenya and Uganda.
