Hrishikesh Mukherjee's condition critical but stable
Mumbai, June 11 (UNI) The condition of Dadasaheb Phalke awardee and legendary filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, admitted in the Leelavati Hospital here, is critical but stable, his son Pradeep told UNI today.
Mukherjee is in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital and the doctors are doing their best. He is still on dialysis and the doctors are monitoring his condition, sources said.
He was admitted to the hospital with chronic renal failure on June 3.
Since the news of Mukherjee's illness broke out, a stream of film celebrities including Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Gulzar, Madhur Bhandarkar, Farooq Sheikh and Anupam Kher have called on the ailing thespian and enquired about his well-being.
Born on September 30, 1922 in Kolkata, Mukherjee began his career in Mumbai in 1951 as an editor and assistant to filmmaker Bimal Roy.
His best known films include 'Satyakam', 'Guddi', 'Namak Haram', 'Milee', 'Golmaal', 'Chupke Chupke', 'Khoobsurat', 'Asli Naqli', 'Ashirwad' 'Anand', 'Anupama' and 'Aashirwad'.
He has also been the chairman of Central Board of Film Certification and National Film Development Corporation.
He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2001 for his contribution to Indian cinema.
