Two killed in border crossfire

Barrackpore, Jun 10 (UNI) At least two people were killed and one injured when Border Security Force jawans opened fire on the Indo-Bangladesh border at Gede in Nadia and at Hakimpur in North 24 Parganas in last 24-hours, according to official sources.

According to police, BSF had fired at a gang of cattle smugglers when the latter were crossing the border ignoring the BSF caution.

While the body of an alleged smuggler, believed to be a Bangladeshi national, was sent for post-mortem, the injured was admitted to Basirhat Sub-divisional Hospital.

On the other hand the BSF was involved in AN exchange of fire with their counterparts in Bangladesh till late last night, leaving a Bangladeshi smuggler dead near Gede border in Nadia District. A Deputy Inspector General BSF alleged that the Bangladesh Riflemen opened fire across the border when BSF chased a gang of cattle smugglers.

Incidentally, such exchange of firing between the two forces across the international border continued till late last night.

Meanwhile, IG of BSF, South Bengal Somesh Goyal rushed to Gede this morning, as the situation in the bordering area became tensed.

Flag meeting between the BSF and BDR might be held during the day today, a BSF source said today.
