SVIMS to get national institute status

Tirupati, June 10(UNI) Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) will get the status of a national institute on lines of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) soon.

Speaking to newspersons yesterday, Health Secretary I V Subba Rao said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 60 crore under the Prime Minister Swasthya Suraksha Yozna (PMSSY)for the upgradation of the institute.

He said TTD had already pumped in Rs 60 crore for this purpose.

Mr Rao said the objective of the PMSSY was to develop a medical institute on the lines of AIIMS in every state.

He said Andhra Pradesh was the only state from which two medical institutes were selected under the programme.

Nizaims Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) at Hyderabad was the other institute.

An expert team from the Medical Council of India(MCI) will visit the SVIMS on June 14 and 15 to give necessary suggestions for improvement, he said.
