Guwahati, June 10 (UNI) Gauhati University (GU) students today ransacked the Vice-Chancellor's (VC) office following lathi-charge by police on agitating students.

The students were demanding dismissal of Head of Department of Hindi B Roychoudhury for alleged relationship with a girl student of the department.

GU Post-Graduate Students' Union vice-president Debasish Bezbaruah informed the students had gathered in front of the VC's office to wait for the outcome of the Executive Committee meeting.

When the meeting failed to arrive at a decision, some students entered the VC's office following which he hit a girl student, he added.

Mr Bezbaruah said, ''After the VC hit the girl, other students started breaking window panes and damaged other property in the office.'' The police, called in by the VC following the ransacking, started lathi-charge on the students.

The student leader said at least 30 boys and 15 girls were injured in the lathi-charge, five of them seriously. They have been admitted to the nearby hospitals, besides the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

He further said about 10 boys have also been picked up by the police.

The University authorities could not be contacted for their comment.
