Filing of papers for first phase ends today

Pondicherry, June 10 (UNI) As many as 137 candidates had filed their nomination papers for the post of the Karaikal municipal councillors and seven for the post of Karaikal Municipal chairman as the filing of nominations for the first phase local body elections in the union territory came to a close here this evening.

As many as 629 candidates filed their nominations for the post of Commune Panchayat ward members of Kottucherry, Neravy, Nedumgadu, Tirunallar and T R Patinam while 96 filed the papers for the post of village panchayat presidents and 136 for the post of Commune Panchayat members.

Elections to the Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam municipalities besides to five Commune Panchayats will be held on June 24 in the first phase.
