Explore alternative fuels: Kalam

Hyderabad, June 10 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today said the country would be self sufficient and independent in energy sector by 2030, by adopting solar, nuclear and bio-diesel energies as alternative fuels.

Addressing the industrialists and corporate managements organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here, Dr Kalam pointed out that the shortage of fossil fuel led to the hike in crude oil prices in the international market.

Stating that the country would be self-sufficient in energy sector in next 25 years by utilising solar, nuclear and bio energy sources, the President expressed hope of producing bio-diesel to the tune of Rs 60,000 crore by 2030.

Production of bio-diesel would raise India to the status of energy producer and facilitate agriculture, employment and a subsequent economic generation. The scientists were conducting research on nano technology, he said.

Suggesting that the country has abundant Thorium reserves for nuclear power generation, Dr Kalam said the country would become a major nuclear power generator once we acquire the technology to convert Thorium into fissile material'.
