Delhi govt will reduce tax on petrol and diesel
New Delhi, June 10 : Taking a cue from Maharashtra government's decision to reduce sales tax on petrol and diesel, Delhi government too decided to follow suit and cut duty on the petroleum products.
However, the quantum of the cut would be decided by the Cabinet on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said today.
''We have decided to give relief to Delhiites on our own and reduce tax on fuel,'' she said and added that a 'good' decision would be taken on how much the cut would be.
At present tax on petrol in the city was 20 per cent while it was 12.5 per cent on diesel.
Yesterday, the Congress-led Maharashtra government had taken the lead in reducing sales tax on petrol, resulting in reduction of petrol price by Rs one.
This was agreed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in a meeting with Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora.
Various Congress-ruled states are following Maharashtra's example.
