Chhattisgarh bandh evokes mixed response

Raipur, June 10 (UNI) A daylong bandh in protest against hike in petroleum prices evoked mixed response in Chhattisgarh with shops remaining closed in the state capital and other towns today.

The call for the general strike was given by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries to protest the hike in prices of petroleum products and imposition of service tax on businessmen and industrial units.

The strike evoked good response in state capital and at district towns of Jagdalpur and Kanker while shops remained open in Rajnandgaon and Kobra towns. Petrol pumps and LPG outlets kept their shutters down.

According to the chamber, the increase in petrol prices would adversely affect small businesses and industries. Imposition of service tax would add additional burden as this sector was already paying a number of taxes, it added.
