Soldier killed, 5 arrested in J

Srinagar, Jun 9 (UNI) A soldier was killed and another wounded in a militant attack at Bandipora today while security forces apprehended five ultras and seized arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, an official spokesman said today.

He said militants attacked an Army patrol with automatic weapons at Aragam village in Bandipora woods of Baramulla district today.

The fire was returned and in the ensuing encounter, two soldiers were wounded, the spokesman said, adding the jawans were immediately evacuated to a hospital where sepoy Bikey Singh succumbed to wounds while the condition of other jawan was stated to be stable.

However, the ultras managed to escape from the scene, he said.

A massive hunt has been launched to nab the ultras.

No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the attack so far.

The spokesman said the Jammu and Kashmir police apprehended three ultras of the Al-Badr militant outfit at Sopore and seized one pistol, two magazines and two VCR cassettes from them.

He said two more ultras, one each at Pulwama and Doda districts, were arrested. One UBGL, one wireless set, seven magazines and 231 rounds were seized from them.
