Scorching heat prevails in region

Chandigarh, June 8 (UNI) Scorching heat prevailed in many areas in north-west India as the mercury further rose in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today.

The maximum temprature hovered above normal in the region, making it another hot day for the people.

Hissar and Ludhiana were the hottest places in Haryana and Punjab respectively with the mercury touching 42.0 degree celsius at these places.

The temperatures also rose at other places in Haryana, including Ambala which recorded 41.2 degrees. In Punjab, the maximum stayed one degree above normal at most places. Amritsar and Patiala showed 41.6 degrees, one degrees above normal.

The temperature also increased in Himachal Pradesh with Sundernagar in Mandi district recording 35.8 degrees and Kalpa in Kinnaur district registering 25.2 degrees celsius.

The capital town of Shimla showed 27.3 degrees, three degrees above normal.

People in Chandigarh and its adjoining areas reeled under intense heat with the mercury rising to 40.6 from 39.8 degrees recorded yesterday.

Western disturbance lay over Jammu and Kashmir and neighbourhood as an upper air cyclonic circulation extended upto 5.0 km above sea level, according to the Weather Office here.

The Met office has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and mainly sunny weather in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.
