Replace phased out vehicles in 3 months: HC to BMC

Mumbai, June 8 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today granted an extension of three more months to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to phase out vehicles more than eight years old.

Earlier on a petition filed by the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG), an NGO, the court had ordered phasing out of vehicles more than eight years old, by December last year.

BEAG in its petition had sought the courts direction in bring bringing down pollution levels caused by utility Vehicles, a majority of which were owned by the BMC.

Based on the submission by BMC cousel K K Singhvi stating 21 compactors and 11 ambulances were the only remaining vehicles needing replacement, while others had already been replaced, a division bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and A S Bagga granted an extension of three months to the BMC.

Following the extension order, BMC counsel assured the court that the work would be completed within this period.
