MARIENFELD, Germany, June 8 (Reuters) Portugal's World Cup midfielder Deco says he is back on top form after a tough league season.

Looking relaxed as he joked with defender Fernando Meira at a news conference today, Deco said he did not feel fully fit when his Barcelona team lifted the Champions League and retained the Spanish title.

''Now I am 100 percent,'' he said. ''I had a big season and it was difficult for me.

''This week I feel much better than I did at the end of the season,'' added the Brazilian-born Deco as he prepared for Sunday's Group D match against Angola in Cologne.

When he made his first appearance against Brazil in 2003, it was reported that established members of the squad like Luis Figo and Rui Costa questioned his right to play for Portugal.

But having lived in the country since he was 17 and gained Portuguese nationality, he was certain he belonged in the team.

''That controversy was more in the media than in the national selection,'' said Deco.

''I never encountered any problems or preconceptions within the team. No one treated me differently.'' Now firmly established in the side, the 28-year-old said he would work hard to ensure Portugal made it through the group.

Deco said the players were confident they would beat former colony Angola.

''More aspects of our game are better,'' he said, ''although as the game draws nearer we naturally become more anxious.

''Certainly we are seeking victory. We are favourites to progress to the next round but it is important to work hard.'' Portugal also face Iran and Mexico in the group.
