Notification II phase local body polls

Pondicherry, June 7: The second phase of the three phased Local Body elections to the Union Territory of Pondicherry was notified today.

Talking to newspersons here, State Election Commissioner R Narayana said the filing of nomination for the second phase commences today and the last date will be June 14. Scrutiny will be done on June 15, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is on June 17 Polling will be on June 27, he added..

Elections to the Pondicherry and Ozhukarai municipalities and Villianur commune panchayat will be held on June 27, he said and added that a total number of 139692 voters will exercise their franchise for the Pondicherry municipality polls, 143812 for Ozhukarai municipality and 64781 for the Villianur commune panchayat.

Mr Narayana said he received a representation, seeking the postponement of certain examinations in view of the elections and had forwarded the same to the Government with his recommendations. A person from Mahe region had moved the Madras High Court, seeking postponement of the elections, which is being taken up on June 12, he added.

He said so far only five persons had filed their nominations for the first phase of election ons June 24. Filing of nominations for the first phase will come to a close on June ten, he added.
