New language policy for primary schools on the anvil

Bangalore, June 7 (UNI) The Karnataka Government will take a decision by the month-end to introduce a new language policy at the primary school level from this academic year, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S Horatti said today.

Talking to reporters here, he said the new policy envisaged making Kannada subject compulsory in English medium schools and English in Kannada medium schools.

The issue, taken up in earlier Cabinet meetings, would be placed before the next Cabinet meet for final approval, he said.

Mr Horatti said the policy would also apply for minority institutions for making teaching of Kannada mandatory from third standard.

The Minister met a delegation of education experts in this regard.
