Manipur, Jun 7(UNI) The United Committee Manipur (UCM), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and other organisations have announced to observe June 18 to commemorate the Uprising of 2001.

Since 2002 the day has been observed in rememberance of those who sacrificed their lives in CRPF and police firing demanding protection of the territorial integrity of Manipur.

After announcement of extension of ceasefire beyond Nagaland in 2001, a massive protest rocked Manipur. The Centre ultimately withdrew its decision. The NSCN(IM) has demanded that the ceasefire be extended to four districts of Manipur, portions of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring Myanmar and Manipur objecting strongly to it.

The UCM will organise a function at Kekrupat, Imphal where all the martyrs were cremated. A memorial has been constructed with their names inscribed on the memorial stones.

The AMUCO announced that a campaign poster will be launched on June 14 and a function organised on June 18 at Gandhi Memorial hall where floral tributes will be offered to the portraits of the martyrs.
