Imphal, June 7 (UNI) The Manipur government has issued an order declaring ''Disturbed Area'' status in the state for another year from June 1.

Seven Assembly constituencies in Imphal Municipal Areas will, however, not fall within the purview of the Disturbed Area status.

The Act has been proclaimed due to violent activities of various militant groups in Manipur and the use of armed forces in aid of civil power had become necessary.

The military are empowered to operate, if the Disturbed Area was declared by the state or the central government under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA).

Under the Act the military can kill anybody on mere suspicion and no citizen is allowed to seek judicial redressal without prior permission from the Union Home Ministry.

The whole of the state was under Disturbed Area status after the killing of Th Manorama in July 2004. But after a massive uprising took place in Manipur, the government decided to lift the Act from the Imphal Municipal areas in 2004 without the approval of the Central government to quell the public uprising.
