UPA Govt to complete East-West corridor: Kyndiah

Shillong, June 5 (UNI) Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region P R Kyndiah today said the Congress-led UPA government has taken all steps to complete the four-lane East-West corridor in time.

Out of the 678 km four-lane road, which falls in North-Eastern Region, Mr Kyndiah told reporters that 18 km Guwahati bypass have already been completed at a cost of Rs 119 crore while a contract for the remaining 574 km has been awarded at a cost of Rs 4650 crore.

Besides, he said the process of calling tenders for the 86 km is in progress.

Mr Kyndiah reviewed the progress of road communication in North East India this afternoon at North Eastern Council (NEC) secretariat with Mr Lapang in presence of National Highway Authority of India and NEC officials.

Mr Lapang, who was present at the news conference, urged the Union Minister for DONER to facilitate with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to put a part of the East-West corridor in Meghalaya's map.

Mr Lapang also asked the NHAI to accelerate road development in the NE for economic development through proper monitoring.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is implementing the East-West Corridor to be constructed over 3300 km.
