Surat, June 5 (UNI) With monsoon on the doorsteps, the scare of water-borne diseases is looming large upon eight municipalities which have recently been merged with the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

The eight municipalities encompass a 36 sq km area and have a six-lakh population. The merger has placed an additional burden on the SMC health authorities.

The SMC authorities have been conducting raids at various eateries in these places over the last one month to check the quality of the food served. Water tanks in schools and government offices are also being checked, SMC senior medical officer Hemant Desai informed.

Meanwhile, work on maintenance and construction of drainages in various parts of the city are yet to be completed.
