Punjab govt to provide free water to poor families

Kapurthala, June 5 (UNI) The Punjab government will provide free water and sewerage facilities to poor families in the state, Local Bodies Minister Chaudhry Jagjit Singh announced here today.

After inaugurating the hundred per cent sewerage and water supply scheme in the town, Mr Jagjit Singh said the government has constituted a sub committee to provide free water and sewerage facilities to the poor families in the state. The committee has been directed to submit the report within a month and the government would take decision on the findings of the committee.

He said a sum of Rs 990 crore would be spent on providing drinking water supply and sewerage facilities all over the state. He claimed all the 124 municipal committees and five corporations in the state would be covered under the scheme for which money would be provided from the municipal development fund.

Jalandhar MP Rana Gurjit Singh said a sum of Rs 11 crore had been spent on providing drinking water and sewerage system in the town. He said three generator sets had been installed at water pumps and a sum of Rs four lakh had been deposited with the State Electricity Board to provide hot line connection to three other water pumps for 24 hours water supply in the town.
