Kolkata, Jun 5 (UNI) An Organ Transplant Co-ordination Centre will be set up in the city to provide 'live' organ transplantation facilities to moriband patients.

An NGO, 'Ganadarpan', in association with several city hospitals, both private and government, would start this centre.

Mr Brojo Roy, general secretary of NGO 'Ganadarpan,' told UNI today that this centre would collect organs from patients after doctors declare them 'brain-dead,' but pathologically alive.

Permission of the patient's family would be needed, after which organs like lungs, heart and tissues would be transplanted to moriband patients.

'' The 'brain dead' patients on ventilator often do not survive but their vital organs remain active till some time. If the patient's family agree to donate the organs, four doctors would examine them for at least 18 hours and then allow the Organ Co-ordination centre for transplantation, '' Mr Roy added.

The NGO had already tied up with eight hospitals in the city in this regard like Apollo Glenagles, SSKM, AMRI, Peerless and Command hospital.

This new transplant centre would be operational withing next six months, Mr Roy added.
