UPA govt may collapse before monsoon session: Mayawati

Lucknow, Jun 4 (UNI) BSP supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre might collapse before the Monsoon Session of Parliament over the Office of Profit (OoP) issue.

''Indeed, there is a political instability in the country. There are chances of mid-term polls after the President returned the controversial OoP bill,'' she maintained.

Addressing a news conference here, Ms Mayawati claimed since Congress had failed at all fronts including keeping prices of essential commodities under check, the party would ''sacrifice'' the government over the OoP issue, rather than allow people reject it for its failure.

''In case of mid-term polls, the Congress will try to derive mileage out of the OoP issue,'' the BSP chief observed.

She claimed for that reason BSP had also postponed its 'Virat BSP Maha Sammelan' in the state capital on June 30.

''We will watch the situation till the monsoon session of Parliament and then re-schedule the sammelan's date,'' she said.

''Had we organised the sammelan now and in case the central government falls in the near future, the BSP will have to hold another rally for the mid-term polls.'' Justifying her apprehension on the UPA government's fall, she said the Election Commission (EC) was ready to disqualify the Parliament members holding OoPs before the monsoon session.

''The government will reduce to a minority as several left MPs would be disqualified -- who are the main constituent of UPA.'' Ms Mayawati also questioned the Congress for delaying the OoP bill till the monsoon session.

''There is something fishy in the Congress' role to delay the bill's passage till the monsoon session,'' she said claiming if the party wanted, it could have called a special session of Parliament to pass it.
