Chennai, Jun 4 (UNI) In a breakthrough in the case related to the murder of an AIADMK functionary, police today arrested one of the gang members involved in the incident.

AIADMK Ambattur Town Secretary M R Ravi was performing pooja in his office at suburban Padi when the six-member motorcycle-borne gang hacked him to death on Friday last.

Police said Ravi had a previous enmity with one 'Vellai' Ravi, a history-sheeter. The crime had taken place at the latter's instigation as he suspected the AIADMK functionary was behind his arrest in a ganja case.

A manhunt had been launched to nab the kingpin and five other culprits, they added.

Even as the police suspected business rivalry to be the motive of the crime, AIADMK General Secretary and Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa alleged yesterday that Ravi had faced threat to his life from DMK men.

After visiting the victim's house and placing a wreath on the body, she charged the police with inaction for not arresting the culprits even 24 hours after the incident.
