Mizoram experiences series of landslides in 24 hrs

Aizawl, June 4 (UNI) Monsoon rains have caused several minor to major landslides in the past 24 hours disrupting surface communication across Mizoram.

The worst-hit capital city of Aizawl has experienced as many as 15 landslides, including two major ones, in different localities blocking roads and posing a danger to the dwellings.

The public works department was busy clearing the road blocks.

State ministers visited the affected areas.

However, in some of the affected areas residents were asked to move to safer places.

State Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Lalrinchhana visited the affected areas in the western and southern parts of the city, Local Administration Minister H Vanlalauva visited several localities in his Aizawl East II constituency.

Saiha district was also affected by a series of landslides blocking the national highway and cutting it off from the rest of the state.

Meanwhile, Aizawl District Deputy Commissioner Vanengmawia said his office has distributed more than one thousand ''silpoulines'' to the affected people for covering surface soil that has come loose due to incessant rains.
