Manipur lawyers threaten to launch stir

Imphal, Jun 4 (UNI) Lawyers in Manipur have threatened to launch a stir in the state over the 'total neglect of judicial services' by the state government.

All Manipur Bar Association president K H Mani said here today that the stir would begin within the next few days. However, it would be launched in a democratic way.

He hinted that the lawyers might abstain from court duties.

Mr Mani said the lawyers were constrained to take up the stir as the Manipur government has totally neglected the judicial services.

All appointments in the judicial services were banned and thus there is shortage of about five judges at the lower courts.

The ban on appointments were lifted only in state Home and Education departments.

Due to insurgency problems and violence, there is need for more judges to speed up the justice delivery system, Mr Mani said.

Mr Mani has put forward a long list of grievances, ranging from lack of proper building, infrastructure, shortage of judges, staff, inadequate pay structure for staff working in judicial services.
