Curfew continues in communally sensitive Aligarh

Aligarh, Jun 4 (UNI) Amid uneasy calm, the indefinite curfew in five police station areas of this sensitive town following communal violence on May 28 continued for the eighth consecutive day today.

Addressing a news conference, district magistrate Anil Sagar and SSP Akhil Kumar claimed the situation was returning to normal.

While, the curfew was total in Sasani Gate, Dehli Gate and Kotwali areas, it was partially lifted in Bannadevi and Gandhi Park areas.

So far, 178 people had been rounded up, some on charges of violating ban order, while others were anti-social elements.

Violence had erupted after local BJP leader and trader O P Gupta was shot dead by armed miscreants.

While Bablu -- one of the accused -- was lynched by locals, Azimullah died of bullet wounds in a city hospital. At least nine people were also wounded in the clashes that followed.
