Agriculture scientists stress on aromatic, herbal plants

Ludhiana, June 4 (UNI) Scientists of Punjab Agriculutral University (PAU) have called upon the women to plant medicinal, aromatic and herbal plants in their fields and kitchen gardens.

On the eve of World Environment Day, PAU scientists interacted with the women of Galib Kalan village today to share their knowledge on environment friendly agricultural practices and a healthy nutritious diet.

On this occasion, Director of Extension Education Dr S S Gill led a team of PAU scientists to give practical tips to the women on the importance of ''nutrition, balanced diet, physical fitness and value of medicinal, aromatic and herbal plants for a healthy family''.

They were also made aware of the need to grow these plants in their countryard for tackling minor ailments in the family.

Senior agronomist Dr Swaran Singh Saini talked about properties and usefulness of plants like haldi (turmeric), mentha, asparagus, tulsi, amla etc.

The women were also educated on the importance of organic kitchen gardens to grow vegetables pulses without any use of plant protection chemicals. The importance of environment, ecology and healthy living was given by Dr Daljit Singh Khurana, Dr (Ms) Neelam Mahajan, Dr (Ms) Sukhminder Kaur and Dr (Ms) H Sidhu.

The women and girls showed keen interest about the usefulness of natural dyes and sought tips on what kind of diet should be given to children of different age groups.

The women and children were told about the importance of healthy living, hygienic kitchen and clean environment which together would help them to obtain the desired 'happy family' status.
