Bangalore, June 3 (UNI) The Congress in Karnataka today denied that it had used money or muscle power for winning the fourth seat in the June one elections to the Legislative Council, as alleged by Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy.

''It is a well known fact that it is the JD(S) which is notorious for using money and muscle power to gain political mileage.

Otherwise let the Chief Minister clarify how industrialists M A M Ramaswamy or Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar won Rajya Sabha seats from the State without heavily bribing the JD(S) Legislators,'' KPCC Spokesman S Ugrappa asked today.

Speaking to reporters here, he alleged that by employing the same means, the Chief Minister's father and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda had become the Chief Minister of the State in 1994.

''We know well what sort of offers the Chief Minister made to the Legislators of small parties and independents to lure them to vote in favour of his party candidates. Is he ready to call for a CBI probe to find out who used money or muscle power,'' he challenged.

Mr Ugrappa clarified that the outside support the Congress had received in this elections was spontaneous and it did not bribe anyone with money or material.

Ridiculing the Chief Minister's claim that his popularity rating had gone up after he assumed office, he said ''if Mr Kumaraswamy is so confident of his growing popularity, let him put an end to the unholy alliance with the BJP, dissolve the Assembly and seek a fresh mandate from the people. People's vote is the real barometer to assess a politician's popularity.'' UNI RS GD TS1843
