PARIS, June 3 (Reuters) Elena Dementieva's tortuous run at the French Open was halted today when she lost 6-4 7-5 in the third round to Israeli Shahar Peer.

The Russian sixth seed, a losing finalist at the claycourt grand slam in 2004, survived tight tussles in the previous two rounds before finally succumbing to a determined Peer.

The 31st seed thumped her chest when a netted forehand from a sliding Dementieva handed her a break for a 6-5 lead in the second set, and she did not waste her opportunity to serve out for the match.

The Russian cupped a forehand into the net to bow out after one hour 44 minutes.

Peer, who had dropped just seven games before her meeting with Dementieva, is aiming to become the first Israeli woman to reach the quarter-finals of a grand slam when she next meets either Martina Hingis or Ivana Lisjak of Croatia.
