BJP to distance from Mahajan's family tragedy

New Delhi, Jun 3: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today sought to distance itself from the controversy following the hospitalisation of Rahul Mahajan, saying the happenings in the family of late General Secretary Pramod Mahajan should not be linked to the party.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj told newspersons after a meeting of senior leaders at the residence of Leader of Opposition L K Advani that the party had all 'sympathies' for the family.

Yesterday Rahul was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state and Mahajan's aide Vivek Moitra was brought dead.

''What happens within the family is not BJP's affair,'' she said.

Except party president Rajnath Singh, none of the top party leaders visited the hospital where Rahul is admitted.

The meeting was attended by senior party leaders Mr Jaswant Singh, Mr Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Mr S S Ahluwalia, Mr Ravishankar Prasad and Vijay Kumar Malhotra and BJP Legal Cell Convenor Satpal Jain.

The meeting also took a decision to organise and educate the partymen and the country through seminars, discussions and debates on the Office of Profit Bill which was returned by President A P J Abdul Kalam.

''The nation needs to know who is sought to be protected retrospectively by passing such a legislation,'' Ms Swaraj said pointing that the BJP had sought the Election Commission to dispose off all the pending cases before it.
