UP law and order has collapsed: Cong to guv
Lucknow, June 1 (UNI) Alleging that the law and order had collapsed in Uttar Pradesh, Congress today asked Governor T V Rajeswar to take stern action against policemen, who have failed to carry out their duty in right earnest.
A UP Congress delegation met the Governor at Raj Bhawan and handed over a memorandum, alleging a woman legislator of the ruling Samajwadi Party had forcefully occupied parts of a Muslim graveyard.
''A Congress leader, who protested the encroachment was beaten up by policemen in mufti...he was tortured with burning cigarettes,'' the memorandum added.
It also mentioned the incident, in which five siblings nearly crushed the Chowk police station Circle Officer in the state capital on Tuesday evening.
''In Mahoba district, a teenaged girl was kidnapped from her house and repeatedly raped and murdered,'' the memo signed by UPCC president Salman Khurshid and CLP leader Peramod Tiwari said.
Later, speaking to reporters, Mr Khurshid said the Jan Morcha rally-attended by leaders of various parties-slammed the performance of the state government. ''Some of the leaders, who attended the rally had at one time supported Mr Yadav...their criticism shows how fast the CM is losing support,'' he said.
