Suggestions sought for phasing out old vehicles in J

Srinagar, Jun 1 (UNI) A committee formed to monitor the Jammu and Kashmir High Court directions has sought suggestions for phasing out all old vehicles in the state, an official spokesman said today.

The Transport Commissioner, who is a member-secretary of the high-level coordination committee headed by the Chief Secretary set up to fix the age of commercial vehicles for being taken off the road, has issued a notification to all the associations and unions concerned so as to examine the issue and prepare a programme to phase out all such vehicles.

According to the notification, all commercial vehicles of more than 15 years of age would be allowed to ply on roads for a period of six months from May 21 provided they hold fitness and pollution under control (PUC) certificates.

It said all commercial vehicles about 25 years or more will cease to ply on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir within a period of three weeks from the date of issue of the directions.

The transport associations and unions concerned or individuals willing to submit their viewpoint before the committee should do so within a period of one month, the notification said.
