Mizoram top tobacco consuming state

Aizawl, Jun 1 : Mizoram tops the list for tobacco consumption. Disclosing this in a function observing the 'World No-Tobacco Day', here yesterday, officer on special duty Dr Jane R Ralte said, "on an average 60 per cent are male smokers and 22 per cent women in the region, which is the highest at the national level." "The national level average shows that a mere 29 per cent are male smokers and 2.5 per cent are women smokers," she added.

Apart from this about 60 per cent of males and 60.7 per cent of females chew tobacco in different forms, against 28.3 per cent and 12.4 per cent repectively at the national level, she pointed out.

According to the recent survey conducted by Mizoram Presbyterian, the largest Christian denomination in the state, Mizo people spend Rs 8,93,933.35 per day for tobacco consumption.

The survey further stated that more than 70 per cent people (both men and women) consume tobacco in various forms.

Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Mizoram also conducted a recent school-based survey of 2295 students, which shows that these students were between eight and tenth standard.
