Medical students call off strike in HP

Shimla, Jun 1 (UNI) The medical students, junior doctors and resident doctors of all medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh called off their indefinite strike and chain hunger strike today after a meeting with Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

The Student Central Association (SCA) of the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital here and Dr R P Government Medical College at Tanda in Kangra district, spearheading the strike, called off their agitation after long consultations with the Chief Minister here.

The medical students and junior doctors were on strike since April 28, while the resident doctors joined the protest on May 18, protesting the Centre Government's decision to reserve 27 per cent seats in higher educational institutions for the OBCs.

The SCA leaders said the medical colleges and hospitals would funtion normally from tomorrow onwards, adding that the anti-reservation issue would be kept alive and raised in different forums.

Medical students and people from different walks of life would continue to raise the issue, which was vital for sustaining merit, they said.

IGMC Principal Surinder Kashyap offered juice to the medical college students on chain hunger strike, marking the end of the strike.

The SCA leaders claimed that the Chief Minister had assured them that the strike period would be condoned and cases, if any registered, against them would be withdrawn.
