Mumbai, June 1 (UNI) Continuing its series of defeats that started with Malvan byelection, the Shiv Sena lost one seat in the biennial Legislative Council elections today due to the cross voting from 20 party Sena Legislators.

Sena suffered a major jolt as 20 of its legislators crossed voted resulting in the defeat of one of Sena's one official candidates, -Vijay Loke. Sena had a strength of 58 in the house while their two candidates Parshuram Uparkar and Loke could collectively polled only 38 votes of the first preference voting.

Though Uparkar got elected in the first round, Vijay Loke trailed and finally got eliminated. Uparkar was the Sena candidate against Narayan Rane in Malvan by election.

The other partywise candidates elected are Rajan Teli 29, Govindrao Adik 25, Ulhas Pawar 29, S Q Zhama 20 (all Congress). The sources revealed that there was a cross voting among the four candidates of Congress as Teli and Pawar got more votes. However it was within the party.

Pasha Patel 26, Keshavrao Mankar 25 (both BJP), Arun Gujrathi 26, Usha Darade 22 (both NCP), Pritamkumar Shegaonkar 24 (RPI-A supported by NCP also won. Vasant Oswal of NCP who got seven votes in the first round, as also eliminated.

PWP candidate Jayant Patil succeeded in securing 17 votes in the first round itself. He got the support of two BJP MLAS, two Shetkari Sanghatana, 3 CPI-M, 2 PWP legislatures apart from several others.

The sources further indicated that several Sena legislators also voted for Patil. Despite having a clear cut majority to elect two candidates, the Sena could win only one seat.

Mrs Darade won in the 10th round, while Mr Patil (PWP) was elected in the last round.

Though the effective strength of the House was 289 including one nominated member, jailed former minister Surupsingh Naik, who is presently recuperating in the J J hospital, was not entitled to vote under the Representation of Peoples' Act, resulting in reducing the total voting strength to 288.

All the legislators including the gangster-turned-politican Arun Gawli turned up for the voting. However the quota which was fixed to 25, came down to 24 as the total tally got decreased by one.
