Gujarat alerts administration against likely heavy rain, floods

Ahmedabad, June 1 (UNI) In the wake of unpredictable nature and fast progress of southwest monsoon this season, the state government today alerted the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) to be ready with all pre-emptive steps in case of increased rainfall activity and likely flood.

Presiding over the zonal meetings of GSDMA, held at different places in the state, Revenue Minister Kaushik Patel called for activating the GSDMA units, already in place at district and taluka headquarters, to deal with emergency situation in short office.

Mr Patel addressed one such meeting at Mehsana on May 30 and at Vadodara today and will address the next one at Rajkot on June 3.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) regional director J M Motwal and State Relief Commissioner are also providing inputs at these meetings, which are also attended by collectors and district development officers of respective regions.

The Minister directed the administration to be ready with BSNL, Government's own GSWAN, wireless and satellite phones, life boats, gas cutters, cranes, bulldozers and other heavy earth moving machinery, generators and helmets.
