Vivekanada bridge authority appoints two committees on accident

Kolkata, May 31 (UNI) In order to find out the exact reason for the accident at construction site of the second Vivekanda Bridge on the northern outskirs of the city last month, its Chairman has appointed two separate inquiry committees and asked them to submit reports by next month.

Categorically ruling out the possibility of any engineering flaw in the accident which had claimed two lives of daily workers appointred by the contractors, Second Vivekananda Bridge Tollway Company Pvt Ltd Chairman S Chakraborty said though the issue of the payment of compensation was being dealt by the concerned contrators, in case of any other finding by the inquiry committees suitable and immediate action would be taken by the authority.

Referring to the safety records of the Rs 1000 crore company during work of the 800-metre-long bridge across the river Hooghly, Mr Ckakrabortry said since the beginning of the construction of the six-lane bridge in April 2004, there was no report of any other accident.

Incidentally the brigde being built at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore, is scheduled to open to public by April 2007 in accordance with the compnay's commitnment to complete the project within 36 months from the beginning.
