TN urges Centre for ordinance on reservations

Chennai, May 31 : The Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed a resolution urging the Centre to promulgate an ordinance to implement 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in institutions of higher education including IITs and IIMs.

The resolution requested the Union Government to go ahead with the reservation policy as it ensured the advancement of the OBCs on par with other sections society. It also appealed to the agitating medical students to withdraw their agitations opposing the reservation.

''Despite the warning issued by the Supreme Court and the appeal made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the medical students were continuing their agitation. Certain oppressive forces were inciting the medical students to continue the agitations'', the resolution said.

Moving the resolution, state Finance Minister and leader of the House K Anbazhagan said over the years the OBCs were denied their educational rights.

Though the Constitution provided reservation for SCs and STs, the Centre was not able to provide reservations for the OBCs.

He also recalled the Mandal Commission recommendations in this regard and the efforts taken by former prime minister V P Singh and the D M K President M Karunanidhi.

The resolution said accepting the Mandal Commission recommendations the union government in the year 1990 ordered 27 per cent reservations for the OBCs in civil posts and services under the government of India. But they have not extended the above reservations on admissions to the educational institutions under the control of the union government even though the Mandal Commission had recommended reservations for the OBCs in educational institutions.

Consequently, the Constitution 93rd Amendment enabled the government to provide reservation for the SCs, STs and OBCs in all educational institutions including private, aided or unaided institutions.

The union government has now proposed to provide 27 per cent reservations for the OBCs in higher educational institutions.'
