TN House adjourns sine die

Chennai, May 31 (UNI) The week-long first session of the newly constitued 13th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die today.

The session, which began on a discordant note with the AIADMK-led opposition boycotting the Governor's address on May 24, adjourned sine die after the House passed a resolution, urging the Centre to promulgate an ordinance, providing 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions.

During the brief session, the House also passed bills, seeking to replace the ordinance on anti-conversion act, repeal TESMA, provide reservation for scheduled caste and backward classes in private colleges and make learning of Tamil compulsory in schools.

The session witnessed bedlam on May 26, when the AIADMK and Congress MLAs exchanged blows, leading to the en masse eviction and suspension of the AIADMK MLAs for the rest of the session.

This forced party Supremo and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to storm into the House alone, the next day to take part in the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor for his address. In a bid to wind up the debate, she took up the mantle of leader of the opposition, but failed to turn up at the house yesterday.

Meanwhile, on a suggestion by Chief Minister Karunanidhi, leader of the House K Anbazhagan moved a resolution, after which Speaker R Avudaiappan announced the revocation of suspension of AIADMK MLAs from the budget session.

The brief session condoled the demise of Hindu Religious and Endowment Minsiter P T R Palanivel Rajan and had adopted a condolence resolution.

The House is likely to meet again during the second week of June for the budget session.
