Surat experiences light showers

Surat, May 31 (UNI) The city received light pre-monsoon showers today even as the monsoon is expected to reach the Surat coast by June 10.

Meanwhile, the civic authorities have geared up to face any eventualities this monsoon season.

Normally, low lying areas of Limbayat and Udhna in the city get affected by the rains every year due to release of water from the Ukai Dam, a senior civic official said.

Last year, around 30,000 people had been evacuated from the flood-hit areas. Around 150 relief centres have been set up this year. Embankments on Tapi river have also been constructed as a safety measure.

A district-level meeting was called by the district collector last week to chalk out a strategy to combat any flood-like situation this year.
