Syed Geelani put under house arrest in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 31: Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was today put under house arrest, official sources said.

They said Mr Geelani was put under house as a precautionary measure.

A spokesman for the HC Aiyaz Akbar told sources that a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani since early this morning.

He said a senior police officer informed Mr Geelani that he cannot leave his home until further orders.

Mr Akbar said Mr Geelani and other senior leaders of the HC were scheduled to visit Handwara where 21 students of a local school had died in boat tragedy yesterday.

They were going there to express their sympathy with the bereaved families as people of entire Kashmir are shocked on this tragic incident, he said, adding putting Mr Geelani under house arrest was most unfortunate.
