'Asom' continues to face resistance
Guwahati, May 31 (UNI) The decision to change the spellings of Assam to Asom has had its share of detractors with the TGP today joining the bandwagon.
The Trinamool Gana Parishad (TGP), in a release, appealed to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to repeal the decision to change the spellings of the state name.
TGP chief Atul Bora said the decision to change the spellings in February was 'hasty and unnecessary' and taken without consulting the nationalist organisations.
Mr Bora questioned the justification of changing the spellings on grounds that 'Asom' would make the people pronounce the word correctly.
He cited the instances of 'West Bengal', 'India' and 'Indian', where there are two sets of names in Indian languages and English.
He requested the Chief Minister to take a final decision only after holding discussions with the nationalist groups.
