TN govt to float global tender to procure colour tvs

Chennai, May 30 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government would float a global tender to procure colour television sets to be distributed free of cost to the poor people in the state, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced in the state assembly today.

Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the House, he said the government has decided to distribute a ''14 inch'' colour television sets to poor families, who do not have a TV.

He said the scheme, one of the poll promises of the DMK, would be launched on September 15 and 17, coinciding with the birth anniversaries of late Chief Minister C N Annadurai and rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy.

He said a committee comprising representatives of legislature parties would be constituted to ensure that the scheme is implemented in a transparent manner. All the eligible families would be given free colour television sets in a phased manner, he added.
