Jalandhar, May 30 (UNI) The National Commission for Scheduled Castes, today said it favoured the UPA Government's move of extending reservation to OBCs in higher education institutions but observed that it was not taken into confidence over the move.

Talking to reporters here the commission Deputy Chairman Mr Fakir Bhai Waghela said the government is supposed to extend the benefit to the deprived class as this is the spirit of the constitution and therefore the move is welcome. As per convention the government should have consulted our commission prior to decision but this was not done, he added.

However, he admitted that the move certainly did not affect adversely the prospects or interests of SCs. He said the commission was doing its assigned job with utmost responsibility.

Mr Waghela was in the town to review the status of Dalits and hear their grievances in Jalandhar district. He also reviewed the progress in the implementation of Special Component Schemes and action in the cases of atrocities against Dalits.
