Private doctors observe strike, stage rally against reservation

Ahmedabad, May 30 (UNI) Private medical practitioners in the city today observed a token strike and took out a procession through the main thoroughfares of the city to protest against the reservation policy.

The call for the strike was given by Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) to protest against 27 per cent reservation in seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in medical, engineering and other professinal colleges, besides central universities.

AMA president Devendra R Patel and secretary Mehul Shah claimed that the strike was successful.

The strike had received support from the Dental Association, Ayurved a and Homoeopathic Doctors' Associations, Chemists, besides junior doctors and medical students of local medical colleges.

Earlier, they marched in a procession from AMA office to Income-Tax Crossing and paid their homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue.

Traffic was held up at the busy crossing on Ashram Road for about half an hour.

Meanwhile, the relay hunger strike by medicos at the BJ Medical College premises here entered the seventh day today.
